APEAL, the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging, announced the successful completion of the REACH Authorisation process by all its members for the use of chromium trioxide and sodium dichromate in packaging steel production.
This milestone ensures the continued supply of European steel for packaging amid the ongoing development of alternative technologies. APEAL members have time-limited Authorisation until 2027 for the passivation of electrolytic tinplate (ETP) and until 2028 for manufacturing electrolytic chromium-coated steel (ECCS).
The Authorisations, obtained through tailored individual applications, cannot be extended beyond the set deadlines. Supply chain partners are urged to transition away from chromium VI compounds before these deadlines, which is in line with APEAL's commitment to regulatory compliance and product safety. Alternative technologies are currently being qualified by stakeholders to meet global standards.
