Indonesian Minister of Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has commended Neo Energy for its investment in Indonesia's first High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) nickel refinery powered entirely by renewable energy.
The refinery will process nickel laterite into mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), a precursor for electric vehicle (EV) battery cathodes. The Neo Energy HPAL project is expected to boost Indonesia's MHP production capacity by 120,000 tons annually.
Located in the Neo Energy Morowali Industrial Estate (NEMIE), the HPAL plant is part of the region's goal to become a green energy mineral processing hub. All operations within NEMIE will be powered by 100% renewable energy, including hydropower and solar energy, positioning it as one of Indonesia's most environmentally sustainable industrial practices.
