The Zimbabwe government has banned the export of chromium ore, which is intended to bring long-term benefits to the country. The ban on chromium ore and chromium concentrate follows the cabinet resolution of August 2021.
The former has entered into force and the latter will enter into force in July 2022. Banning the export of chromium ore will maximize the existing capacity of the smelter and maximize the use of the country's rich chromium resources to realize the product value chain. The steel industry welcomed the government's decision to ban the export of chromium ore, saying it would help local enterprises obtain ferrochromium at competitive prices.
